1. WELCOME
The home stretch.  I can hardly believe it.  That means I am writing this from the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.  Now that the national press is reading our press kit and screening our shows, they are waking up to what is going to be an important and entertaining night of programming on PBS.  All of us involved in the project are busy getting out the word, and the press is paying attention.  Now is your chance to make the press in your communities aware of not just the premiere on January 21st , but of all the activities you have planned surrounding the broadcast.  Take a look at the outreach web site again for tools you can use to do that.  We at TPT and at Kelly & Salerno are happy to help you if you’ve got additional ideas or needs.  Just contact us at the email below.  Keep fighting the good fight and doing what you do so well.  And we will support your efforts to the best of our abilities.

Naomi Boak
Executive Producer, “The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s” & “Alzheimer’s: The Help You Need”

2. SPOTLIGHT ON THE DELTA SOCIETY
Scientific research has shown that pets decrease feelings of loneliness and isolation, can improve factors related to heart health and, in nursing home settings, increase social and verbal interactions.

The Delta Society®, whose mission is to improve human health through service and therapy animals, is making a positive impact.  Delta Society programs, include the Pet Partners ® Program, which trains and screens volunteer-animal teams to provide animal-assisted activities and therapy visits in healthcare and school settings. The National Service Dog Center (NSDC ®) is a Web-based program that provides information to people in need of – or already partnered with – service animals. Additionally, the program provides online resources to people who face difficulties entering public buildings when their service dogs are present, and to businesses who want to know how to be in compliance with the law.

Through its 8,000 registered people-animal volunteer teams, Delta Society’s programs have touched the lives of nearly two million people across the nation last year.

Some grantees have incorporated Pet Partners in their outreach activities to extend the value of therapy animals to those with Alzheimer’s, their caregivers and loved ones.  If you are holding screenings, discussion groups or other events, consider inviting Pet Partner teams to promote the valuable services Delta Society offers and for added promotional and “just fun” value.  For a list of Pet Partner affiliate groups, go to http://www.deltasociety.org/petpart/ppag.htm#list .

3. SPOTLIGHT ON LAST ACTS PARTNERSHIP
Last Acts Partnership is the result of bringing together Partnership for Caring and Last Acts, organizations with nearly 70 years of experience and expertise coordinating, assisting, and mobilizing people and institutions who are advocating for quality end-of-life care.

Last Acts Partnership is working with consumers, consumer groups, healthcare professionals, religious bodies, advocates, educators, and health care institutions – everyone with a stake in improving end-of-life care for Americans. They are a one-stop resource and conduit for disseminating credible, reliable and cutting-edge knowledge regarding end-of-life care data, issues, trends and practices in the U.S. and are a channel for extensive research, new information and expertise. Last Acts Partnership provides streamlined access to reference materials and information sources on end-of-life and end-of-life care for the lay public, as well as medical and healthcare professionals, and is also a leading authority on end-of-life care issues that is effecting change by addressing the issues, trends and practices around end-of-life care with policy makers and advocates.

Last Acts Partnership operates the only national crisis and information hotline dealing with end-of-life issues and providing state-specific living wills and medical powers of attorney. Last Acts Partnership also serves as a clearinghouse for sharing information and ideas at the national, state and local levels and provides a forum for discussion, collaboration and broad dissemination of new information to help ensure dying people and their loved ones receive quality care and are honored and supported by their communities.

For more information on quality end-of-life care, visit the Last Acts Partnership Web site at http://www.lastactspartnership.org , or call (202) 296-8071.

5. FREE OUTREACH MATERIALS
One size definitely does not fit all when it comes to Alzheimer’s information.  That’s why the Alzheimer’s Association has created and collected an incredible variety of handouts, fact sheets and articles in one convenient place.  All of them are downloadable, and can be printed and distributed for any of your outreach initiatives!

Visit http://www.alz.org/ResourceCenter/ResourceCenter.htm to browse these materials by topic.  Take special note of their “Diversity Toolbox,” which provides Alzheimer’s information for minority groups, including handouts in multiple languages.   If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, talk to someone at The Alzheimer’s Association’s Benjamin B. Green-Field Library and Resource Center.  They are the nation’s largest Alzheimer’s library and can be reached at 312.335.9602 or 800.272.3900, Mon-Fri from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm CT.  You can also contact the Association’s 24/7 Contact Center at 1-800-272-3900.  They always have trained staff ready to help in as many as 140 languages/dialects!
