Outreach Newsletter: October 2003 "We
are the sum of our memories. Everything we know, everything we perceive,
every movement we make is shaped by them." - David Shenk, The Forgetting 1. WELCOME We Have an
Air Date! As for that half hour with David Hyde Pierce, we will tape at our studios here in St. Paul on October 25, 2003. It will be packed with need-to-know information for anyone concerned about Alzheimers disease. I know many of you are planning to localize that half-hour show or produce your own. We will have more information about how you can do that in our next newsletter. And more good news we have posted a streaming video clip for promotional purposes on our outreach website (click on the link below). We chose this particular scene to alert the press about the looming healthcare disaster that is Alzheimers disease. Soon we will feed to stations two more video clips: one 3 minute preview of the show that can be streamed on the web, and another to prompt discussion of caregiver issues at your local events. Please send us updates about your activities and any anecdotes you think will help others. We will print them in the next newsletter. Naomi Boak

ON: NIA Alzheimer's Disease Education and Referral Center When this story hit the news in August, many of our excellent partner organizations stood ready to answer questions, make referrals, and provide resources and expertise. One of those partners is the Alzheimer's Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center, a service of the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The ADEAR Center compiles, archives and disseminates information concerning the disease for health professionals, people and families living with Alzheimer's, and the public. All ADEAR information and materials are carefully researched and thoroughly reviewed by NIA scientists and health communicators for accuracy and integrity. The ADEAR Center Web site provides dozens of free publications, some in Spanish. Topics range from symptoms, diagnosis, risk factors, and related disorders to treatment, caregiving, home safety and research. Some of these publications may be ordered in bulk for your events. For stations offering training events, check out the training materials and guidelines for health care and caregiving professionals. These can all be found at http://www.alzheimers.org/eshop. You can also call the ADEAR Center toll-free at 800.438.4380. The NIA also funds 29 Alzheimer's Disease Centers (ADCs) and three Affiliate Centers at major medical institutions across the U.S, any of which may make available researchers or other professionals to participate in speakers' series, town hall meetings or your follow-up programming.. For a list of centers, check http://www.alzheimers.org/adcdir.htm. Summary: You can find and order accurate and useful information for any kind of activity or event from ADEAR or on their website. ADEAR and NIA can also be a source of experts for speaking events, local follow-up programming or phone banking.
3. PEOPLE
POWER: METLIFE VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH OUTREACH EFFORTS It is not too early to think about what your volunteer needs might be. Potential involvement where volunteers could help might include: ·
Helping to staff phone banks (if Alzheimer's expertise is not required) This is a marvelous opportunity to work with our funder and others in your community to further extend the reach of this effort.
4. ENJOY
YOUR MEMORY WALK... AND LET US KNOW HOW IT WENT! Already done the walk in your area? Are other events under way at your station? We really want to know how it's going! Please drop us a message about what's worked (or what hasn't) at your Forgetting outreach events so far. Share wisdom, advice, questions -- or photos!-- with others by e-mailing your stories to Jeff, our e-newsletter editor, at jjones@tpt.org.
5. NOVEMBER: NATIONAL ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH Don't forget that the 20th anniversary of NADM is next month and many Alzheimer's Association chapters will be sponsoring special events. Contact your local chapter or visit http://www.alz.org/ to find out more about activities in your area and how your station can play a part.
6. NEW PHOTOS ON The Forgetting OUTREACH WEB SITE The Outreach Web site www.tpt.org/NPD/forgetting now includes more photos for use in promotional materials. Find headshots, stills from the film, the program key image and informational captions about them all! The Outreach Tool Kit, the one-sheet program summary, information on grant recipients, FAQs and old versions of this newsletter full of useful information are all still available on the site as well.
7. COMING SOON: FEED DATES AND The Forgetting GOES ONLINE Look for a special e-mail this month announcing feed dates and times for two different promo reels. We will be providing the three-minute clip shown at the PBS Annual Meeting as well as an excerpt from the documentary. The excerpt will feature two support groups in-action and act as a prompt for outreach discussion. Also, the official companion Web site to The Forgetting is scheduled to launch late this month at PBS.org. Look for more details about this one-of-a-kind on-line resource in next month's e-newsletter.
