I did short and wide & it went veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slow.

HI I am Age 11 and it seems it twists because of the air pressure if you are holding it and make you hand go down fast you can feel what happens.

when i first read the experiment, i was stumped at how to solve this problem, but after trying a few designs of my own, i've decided that the shorter they are, and wider, the slower they descend

Maggie, MI | Whirligig
I used the same type of paper for all three of my whirligig. I dropped them from the same height and counted the seconds until they hit the ground. The short and skinny one took 2 secs., the tall and skinny one took 2.5 secs., and the short and wide one took 3 secs.

Paolo, MN | Whirligig
great!

Zachary, WA | Whirligig
My mom and I made the three different types of whirligigs. The tall skinny one worked best, although the short wide one was very close. We also tried an experiment with having the whirligig right side up and upside down. The right side up whirligig twirled well each time. The upside down one twirled well only 2 out of 6 times. It had to turn itself right side up to spin, and sometimes it didn't flip itself around fast enough.

Rudy, IL | Whirligig
The shorter, wider blades seemed to do better. We thought the longer blades would be better, but they weren't.

Sarah, TX | Whirligig
I am 8¼ and I think that the whirligig is really neat and it could be a great toy, I found that it works like a Helicopter but it goes down instead of up.

Paul, WI | Whirligig
I am age 5 and I made the whirligig fall as slow as it could because I made the wings as wide as they could get and the body as short and skinny as as it could i found that when it spins it lets the air out from under the wings but short and skinny falls the fastest but My brother Andy loved because it is fun to watch it spin

Ayman, FL | Whirligig
To find out the answer to this question, I made different sizes of the paper helicopter. I found out that the bigger the size the slower it will fall. This is due to the fact that the air pressure coming from beneath the paper helicopter is more thus slowing the fall downward.
