Heather, MB | Thanks DragonflyTV
On behalf of my son Andrew (age 9), I would like to thank the staff
of Dragonfly TV for taking the time to talk to Andrew after the
July 31 show that was done at Mall of America. Watching the show
was the highlight of his week-long vacation to Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Andrew was able to meet both the hosts, and was given a T-shirt.
He also was able to "audition" for the show (and by the
way, if he was being considered, we wouldn't hesistate to drive
back to the Twin Cities from Winnipeg).
Andrew is a huge science lover, and a great fan of your TV show!
It was a wonderful coincidence that your show was at the mall that
day. Since returning how to Winnipeg, Andrew has hardly removed
the shirt, and has become a big ambassador for your show!
Thank you for producing such a wonderful, educational and engaging
program for older children. Your show proves (as Andrew would say)
that "science is cool".

Todd, 31, OR | Mistaken explanation in
motocross story about 3 girls.
It is disappointing when a show about science
gives kids a mistaken explanation for a phenomenon. I happened to
see your recent story about 3 girls who investigated body position
with respect to landing a motorbike jump. The explanation given
was that when they shifted forward on the bike that the extra weight
on the front made the front of the bike go down and land first.
This is the equivalent of saying that heavy objects fall faster
than light objects which is a conjecture that was disproven centuries
ago. The correct explanation is derived from Newton's third law
of motion. "For every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction." The action of shifting your weight forward in mid-air
has a corresponding effect on the bike. This is what the girls observed.
DragonflyTV | Mistaken explanation in motocross
story about 3 girls response
DragonflyTV regrets any misconceptions derived from the motocross
segment. We intended to convey that a shift in the rider's body
position results in a change in position of the bike (what amounts
to a rotation), rather than to say the the front of the bike "falls
faster" than the rear of the bike. Thanks for watching the
show so carefully.

Dear dragonflytv, on today's episode, the segment called "coconauts",
the three girls gave the wrong information. They said that the liquid
inside the coconut is called the "milk". It really is
the juice because you make coconut milk from the meat of it and
coconut juice is natural.

Lyn, IL | DFTV in
Illinois
I use your WONDERFUL program for part of my home school program
for my 11-year-old son. I tape the programs every Sunday to use
on Monday morning. But . . . yesterday there was no Dragonfly! We
discovered that when we rewound and readied ourselves for a great
watch. What happened? I now see that you're not listed for the next
several weeks. What happened? What can we do to encourage you to
continue? Surly you haven't discontinued the program!
I have any suggestion at all (and again, I think your program is
WONDERFUL and so does my son!), I would suggest slowing the pace
just a bit. My son is very bright, very fast, etc., but I think
the material is SO good that it ought to be presented just a tad
more slowly. PLEASE continue your programming~
sincerely,
Lyn (a highly interested mom)

Don't worry, DFTV is still in production. We are working on Season
2 right now (will begin in 2003). In the meantime, your local station
might re-run the first 13 episodes of Season 1. The best thing is
to call your station directly and ask. Sometime they put it in a
different time slot for re-runs. Thanks for watching.

show at home one afternoon. The problem is, I don't remember when
it was on and I can't find the listing anywhere in the UNCTV site
or through yours. I watch the Winston-Salem PBS station, but where
I teach, we would use the Statesville station. I would love to use
your show in my class and any help you can give me as to when and
where I can find it would be helpful. Also, can we buy videotape
copies of the show? I teach three separate classes throughout the
day and would love for all of my kids to see it. Thanks again, Bobbi

I just saw your show today (3-2) and had asked my husband to record

I started recording two weeks ago, and missed last Sat. (2-23).
I especially enjoyed today's program on tornados and storms, and
knew my grandson would love it too. Well, guess what? My husband
forgot to record it today. I am very upset. Is there any way I could
get copies of the series, from the beginning perhaps? Anyhow, anything
you could do to help would be very much appreciated. I even e-mailed
my grandchildren today telling them about today's program and that
I would be sending it now instead of waiting for the next episode.

I really enjoyed your show. It was so interesting. How did you get
the kids to be on the tv? Did they get a reward? I hope you will
do more investigations on sea otters. Could the kids figure out
how much the sea otters groomed without the charts and graphs?
DragonflyTV | Response
Glad you liked it, Kyle. No, the kids don't get a reward, they just
get to be on TV. We hope you will try some otter investigations,
or study other animals. Charts and graphs are just one way to make
sense of all the observations that Michelle and Josue made. Can
you think of another way to present numbers that would be interesting

Glenn, IL | Annoyed
As a science teacher, I'm disappointed that Dragonfly has chosen
to go the "Bill Nye" route, believing that the only way
to interest kids is to use nauseating camera angles, quick cuts,
and other distracting images. The science itself should be enough
without having to be "entertaining" besides. I find the
style of presentation to be annoying and definitely distracting
from the excellent messages.
Julie, MD | Disappointed
I am a science teacher in Maryland. I was a previous contributor
to Dragonfly magazine. I just watched DragonflyTV for the first
time and was disappointed. I found the approach and content of the
show to be right on target for kids. However, I didn't care for
the delivery. The show is so fast paced that it is difficult to
watch. I understand that you are trying to appeal to kids lacking
in attention span by mimicking a video game, but the frames go by
so fast that it is nearly impossible to focus on the pictures or
to process the information. I believe that the content alone would
hold kids' attention, without having to flash frames so rapidly.
Alexandra, 10, VT
I think your show is to quick-paced. There is so much "fast
action" that you can't concentrate on the science. I think
it would be much better if you focused more on the science and not
doing all sorts of quick pictures.
DragonflyTV | Disappointed
Response
The first show certainly is fast paced. See if future episodes move
at a pace which is more satisfying.
Jim, 30, OH |
I saw your second show on WVIZ and frankly, I didn't see the science.
I think in the process of trying to be so hip you lost your way.
It looked more like you were trying to camoflage the science under
some type of rap scenario. Kids aren't that lame that they need
everything dumbed down. Show them you have some confidence in their
attention span and cognitive abilities. If you try to make it too
fun without challenging their reasoning, they won't gain a thing
