  Dog Intelligence

Bailie, KY | Dog Intelligence
I llllllllllllllllooooooooooooovvvveee dogs!I think there very smart. Infact i have 2 dogs myself. Lily and Riley (my dogs) are both very very smart. Ithink it's because Riley is a chocolet lab and Lily is a miniture schnausser. Well i've gotta go bye-bye!

Stef, AL | Dog Intelligence
Dogs are smart but can they talk human if why not now . Can we teach them ?

David, ME | Dogs
Poodles are definitely the best dogs to have and they are extremely intelligent. My dog is the best and he beats everyone else's no matter what you say.

David, ME | Dogs 2
Dogs are much more fun than cats are. Cats are not dumb but they are not half as intelligent as dogs. Additionally, they are not man's best friend. Lastly, if someone attacked you, a dog would bark at them and bite them, but how scary is a cat to someone?

Kelsey | Dingo
I think that the dog breed Dingo is the BEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brain, AZ | Rhodesian Ridgeback
I once read that a Rhodesian Ridgeback is Smartest Breed. followed by standard size poodle, German Shepherd, Labs, retrievers, border collies and i dont remember the rest of the order..and wolves are wolves...not dogs...tho all dogs did come from wolves...there are not many domesticated wolves...i have two very smart German Shepards..but if you noticed...i did not place them first just cuz i own them...matter factly...i never owned anything else(owned six of them!!)My dogs can read sign language commands, retrieve items according to how u spell them b o n e....b a l l...ETC.

Molly, MN | Dog Learning
i think dogs have more agility & cats are better in tracking.
do you think that???????????

Kaitlyn | Testing...1.2.3
I did a test to see if a cat or a dog was smarter. And I put a dog treat under aboard to see how much time it would take hem to get it. It took hem one minnit to get it. I got the cat and did the same thing to her. And it took her 30 sec.

Brent | Dog Vision
Can Dogs see color ??

Holly, TX | Fleas
I think that cats are cleaner than dogs. The reason I think that might be because I have An outside dog and 3 inside cats. When they get baths there is 1 0r no fleas. My dog doesn't get baths but if she did she would have lots of fleas found all over her.I wonder if Roxi was an inside dog would she have fleas? If my cats were outside cats would they get fleas?I also wonder if fleas are attracted to dogs more than cats.

Therese Q, CA | Besenji part 2
You may have read what I wrote before on the Besenji. I would like to write more. This does not have to do with dog intellegence. To stay with the subject of dog inteljlligence I will write somthingsimiler. To stop a dog from pooping on a carpet here are some things to do.
1. Fill up a spray bottle with water and squirt the dog when you catch him/her in the act.
2.Tap the dog lightly on the nose.
3.Show the dog the bad thing he/she did.
If you stick to one of these items your dog will gradually stop poopin on the floor.
Therese Q, CA | Besenji
Besenjis are, like pharoh hounds have benn around for years. The besenji is a rare dog. Looking like Dingos the dogs are cute. Unlike any other dog Besenjis yodel. Thats all for now.

Nicole, WI | Dog Intelligence
dogs are commonly judged as dumber than us just because they cant express their emotions, but there are humans who cant so why does this make them lower than us?
there are humans who show no feelings but that does not make the any less smart. in fact this even may be a sign of intelligence.
thank you for letting state my opinion.

Anna, NH | Dogs and Hamsters
i looooooove dogs and hamsters i have 1 and 1.

Greg, CA | Border Collies again!
its a total fact border collies r smarter than anything else in the dog world sienctfiic tests have been done.

Laura | Potty Training
My dog smokey how can I train him for not useing the potty on the carpet.

Kaitlyn, AL | Cute
Dogs are sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute.

Joy | Dog Math
dogs know math and people have just found out!!!!

Micayla, 13, MD | Retrievers
I think the retrievers are the smartest breeds. There are the only dogs smart enough to realize that water isn't going to hurt. All of the other breeds don't even want there paws wet.

Alexia, ME | Retrievers...reply
Just about every single dog that I have seen loves to go swimming, I have never seen a dog "scared" of water, and I have 4 of them...

Ricky, MN | Retrievers...reply
My dog is not keen on water, and hates getting his paws wet in the grass.

Marcella, MP | Dogs are very intelligent
Dogs should not be rated on their trainablilty. The Basenji is an EXTREMELY intelligent dog that (fortunately) has not been bred to the point of idiocy. Basenjis are African dogs that have recently been domesticated in the U.S. They are difficult to train because they are so intelligent that they fend for themselves, and don't try to pplease you all the time. Like humans, they think for themselves (just like cats, also.) But, i do have to admit, i would prefer a dog that is easily trained, to a Basenji.

Annie, PA | Smart Dog
the smartest DOG is a wolf! there brains are much larger than the brains of a wolf-sized dog and it all comes from having to live by their wits!

Sara, TX | Smart Dog
I think that my dog is realy smart but shes just a puppy so I wont know untill she grows up , BUT the vet said that she is one of the most intelagent dog in the world! so I will wait and see!

Rachel, CO | Best Friends
I really like dogs because they can be your best friends when you don't have anybody to play with.

Whisper, AZ | Cat and Dog Intelligence
On the topic of cat vs. dog intelligence, I think that it is futile to try and compare them. They are both very different species and therfore act on different instincts. Dogs are always willing to please because to survive or move up in the pack, they would have to please their group leader. They are very social and pack oriented animals and therfore are more willing to follow orders. Cats, on the other hand, are independant animals and do not feel the need to confrom with others wishes. It only takes one mouse to feed one cat, they do not have any motivation to coexist in a pack. It is hard enough to design a racial blind IQ test, imagine having to develop a species blind one. With the current knowledge of animals that we have today, it isn't possible to fairly test both species.

Gabriella, FL | Black Lab II
Black lab: dogs are full blooded mammles. My black lab is 12 years old.
dogs dont have very good eye sight, but they have very good hearing.
dogs are very smart dogs. dogs come from the wolf family.

Lucy, KS | Dog Learning
I like cats better than dogs but I think it's really hard to decide which ones smarter. Anyway I do think that dogs can learn from singlangwig[ I don't how to spell it!]because most dogs today can learn pretty good just by speeking to them and singlandwig isn't that diserent.[I might want to make that sentace shorter!]

Lexi, 10 | Full blooded vs. Mix breeds !
Are full blooded dogs more smarter, loyal, safisticated, intelegent, companionable, and obedient? Or are mutts, mixe's, (and or) wildlife canine hybreds? Or is that just their ancient brothers of the wild. The indians companion and back bracking canine.THE WOLF. If your scientists can figure that out than please update your final and most complete answer on your website as soon as possible!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lexi, 10 | I LOVE DOGS!!!
I love dogs. Dogs are my favorite anamle in the world!

Gillian, AL | Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
I know that Border Collies are the smartest breed of dogs. When I got my new puppy, I learned that a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is very intellegent, too. It could be the second smartest or fourth smartest, somewhere up there. I can't really remember. Tollers were recognized by the American Kennel Club on either Intellegence day or Canada Day (I think it would be Intellengence Day). They've been around for years, but they aren't a very famous breed. Theyw ill be soon, though. Search them on Google or some other search site. They are really cute. And I have one! Yay! I'll be doing agility with her when she's old enough.

Hollie, PA | Dog minds always need to be challenged.
My dog is a dalm./boxer mix. He is the smartest dog ever, though I am a tad biased. He plays dead, rolles over, opens door and cabinets, knows everybody's name in the family and where there room is located, he can beg, dance, give you five and much more. My favorite part though is is ability to cuddle. I think dog are as smart as YOU make them. Treat them like dogs and they will act like the, treat them like children and the will act like them. Dog minds always need to be challeneged;a bored dog is a mischievious dog. Remeber use it or loose it!!!

K, RI | Dogs are very intelligent
Dogs are very intelligent, and just because you have a certain breed doesn't mean they are the smartest. Border Collies are listed in many things as the smartest dogs but that doesn't mean they are easiest to train, different dogs are smart in different ways. Dogs are smart in a way that we are able to communicate with each other more than with some other animals.

Kiersten, PA | Dogs are...
I think that the best dog to have, also the BIGGEST, is an Irish Wolfhound. I think that because they are BORN trained! At age 1, you can say "sit" and it'll do it. They're expensive though!!!

Akira, 14 | Cats are more intelligent
Why do many people base dog-intelligence on being able to follow commands - Usually human-contructed ones. The outgoing, willing and obeying dogs are not exactly the smart breeds, they just seem to be more so submissive. For instance, cats - Cats show intelligence by NOT following many commands that dogs do, because why would they want to do something that they do not have to do just for the amusement of a Human? Shy animals are not really 'unintelligent', and probably just can't be bothered following human commands.

Crystal, 10, UT | Black Lab
the black lab or the retriever is the smartest dog

DragonflyTV | Dog Test?...reply
Remember that you won't be testing intelligence so much as performance ability. DFTV kids tried four tests with two breeds: 1) get out from under a blanket; 2) find a treat under a cup; 3) find a treat under a blanket; 4) find a treat under a low shelf. There are many other performance tests you can try with any breed, but again, you won't really be measuring intelligence. Check out Dr Stanley Coren's book, The Intelligence of Dogs, for some ideas for tests. Dr Coren ranks dogs according to their intelligence, but other animal specialists disagree with his findings.

Grace, 13, AB | Dog Test?
What are some good intellegence tests I can do for all kinds of dog breeds?

Rachel, 10, IN | Mirror Dog? response
I think that dogs are able to recognize themselves in mirrors. Dogs can do a lot of amazing things. Knowing how intelligent they are, I'd say yes they can. My dog is also a lab. It's a yellow lab. Also, I really have a love for wolves. I think they are really intelligent. If they weren't, where would dogs get their intelligence from? Dogs are desendants of wolves, you know. Does anyone else share yheir love of wolves with me?

Melissa, MN | Top Ten?
Does anyone know where to find like a listing of the smartest breeds of dogs or even the top ten? I personally thing that german shepherds are the top breed along with collies and shetland sheepdogs! I have two gsd that are very very smart and one shlelty!!!!

Flex, GA | Dogs are intelligent
Having had at least 2 or more dogs as pets my entire life, having many different breeds from pure bread to mutts, I consider myself to be as knowledgeable about dogs as anyone. Dogs are very, very emotional creatures and this in a large part determines its' intelligence. Teamwork and interaction between a dog and its' human also play a large part in a dog's intelligence. Which breed is the most intelligent? Whichever breed that is most compatible emotionally with its' human.

Ashley Janelle, 13, LA | 1. Border Collies
MEGANS ANSWER:TOP SMARTEST BEEDS 1.Border collie 2.Poodle 3.German shepard 4.Golden retriver 5.Doberman pincher.I hav 2 Border Collies,(well sorta).my oldest,the smartest, my favorite,my Best Friend is missing(STOLEN I'm Sure)for about a month now:( he is VARY smart and I REALLY miss him. :(

Snaziuki, 12, CA | Border Collies Rock
For anyone who wanted to know, Border Collies are the smartest Breed but the smartest dog (in the universe) is a poodle. Poodles in general are the second smartest breed.

M, TX | Poodles and Border Collies
I know for a fact that poodles and border collies are the smartest followed by Jack Russell terriers.

Miyuki, 16, BC | Dogs Can Understand Humans
I believe that dogs can understand humans. For example., if you were sad, then why do some dogs seem to know you are sad and join you to make you happy, why is it that when you are hyper, they join in the fun. and for the intellegence, why would they say that some dogs are smarter then others. If the person they picked picked all the same dogs of one breed and tested them all. Plus why do they ever cound mixed breeds, I know for a fact, that my friends dog a mix border collie, dalmation and sheltie mix, plus other dog, just your basic mutt., and I believe that she is as smart as any old border collie. She has some "dumb" breeds in her, but why does she thrive... because she is an induviduel, not just one dog

Katie, 12, TX | Can We Talk To Dogs?
Can we communicate with dogs through body langauge?

DragonflyTV | Can We Talk To Dogs respones?
Well, dogs can be trained to respond to body signals of their owners, so in a way, yes, we can communicate to dogs this way. It is better to say we can shape a dog's behavior to respond to body language.

Tybirius, 13, NY| Dogs are good
i think dogs are good to people

Riley, 10, AR | Do Dogs Understand People?

Amber, 13 , MN | City dogs vs Country dogs
Hello to the hosts and other people of Dragonfly TV. My name is Amber, I am 13 and live in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. I have been observing my Black lab mix lately and have noticed a streak f determination in him. His name is Obadiah, we call him Obie, he is a rescued mutt that we recieved at the middle/end of March. I have observed that when it comes to his toys and/or treats ending up under the couch, he will not be distracted in his "rescue mission". He is a extremely well trained dog and no command is strong enough to stop him from trying to "dig out" the toy(s)/treat(s), as I saw done with the board, treat and Fischer, July 1st episode 5:00 to 6:00, (or is it 5:00 to 5:30? Hmm...) I tried calling him Scarlet instead of Obie, but their was no sign that I was even talking until he heard the actual command (come, sit, down... Ect.) well I just wanted to share the results of my observations with you, the people and hosts of Dragonfly TV.

JP, 10, MN | City dogs vs Country dogs
Are city mutts more crafty than
country mutts or more gentle?

Kylie, 10, OH | Smart Huskies
I think the smartest breed is a Huskie!!!!!!!!!!

Rachel, 9, IN | Smart Labs
I think Labs are the smartest dogs! What other dog can swim, fetch birds for hunters, AND be good and loyal companion? I mean, if one lab was a dog without a home, (which some people call mutts) I bet it could survive because they are really clever.

Shelby, 12, PA | Dogs listen
how do dogs listen to you? Pick aome easy command and say it different ways, like silly, funny, sad upset, asking or telling. She which ones the dog listens to best.

Megan, 14, AB | Five smartest dogs
What are The five smartest dogs? megan wants to know!!!!! is it a retriever or a shitsu? or a bulldog??? if you guys think your scientists anwser this question please!!!!!!!!!!

DragonflyTV | Five smartest dogss response
Here's an answer from Ray and Lorna Coppinger, dog intelligence experts: One rule is, Do not
ever, ever get drawn into the question of who is smartest, or who is most intelligent. You have to ask: Smartest at what? Some breeds of dogs can easily be taught to herd sheep. Other are much better at learning to pull sleds, or hunt, or retrieve, or sniff for lost people. Is a retriever 'smart' because when you throw a ball it will fetch it for you, even without any training? Will a Pyrenees do that? Can you even train a Pyrenees to chase and fetch a ball back to you?

Some scientists have set up experiments to try to determine the smartest dogs. And they actually have a scoring system, and they actually then rank the breeds from smartest to dumbest. But what are the scores based on? Survival? Getting enough to eat? Finding a mate? Well, no, they seem to be based on the animal's ability to learn certain human-constructed tasks, to solve an array of human-constructed puzzles.

One problem with this is that a scientist cannot test all the animals in any one breed. She or he has to select individuals from various breeds. And these individuals have all, mostly likely, been brought up in different environments. Developmental environment has an important effect on adult behavior. This is one of the problems humans have run into with 'intelligence-testing' of people. Your IQ seems to depend at some big level on your background and education. Should it be different for dogs? We doubt it.

Marissa, 10, MN | Purebreeds vs mixed breeds
Is a dog smarter if it is a mutt?

Heather, 14, NY | Talk to dogs?
do dogs really talk to people?

Rachel, 12, BC| Communicate with dogs
how can you comunicate with a dog?

Brianna, 9, NJ | Dog sight and and sense of smell
Dog's have come in second place of having the best eyesight. Dog's come in first place of having the best scense of sniffing.

Anne, 9, Maine | Cats vs. dogs
My friend and I tried to test our cats, but they wouldn’t do the tricks we set up. Even if we had food, they still wouldn’t do the tricks. What else can we do to test our cats?

Stephanie, 9, South Dakota | Cats vs. dogs response
My mom says cats are too smart to do tricks, and that’s why dogs are dumber. My dad thinks cats are dumb because they never listen to what you say.

Diane, 11, NY | Cats vs. dogs response
why don't cats and dogs agree. I have a cat and a dog and they are constantly getting into fights. What can I do to make them stop.

Carly, 9, CT | Cats vs. dogs response
i put some turky in a plastic bag that you usally get at a food store. NOT ZIPLOCK! not to far from the end of the bag. Pepper (my cat that is age 2) went inside the bag and siezed it then ate it. Do you know anything else i could test my cat on?

Samantha, 10, NY | Many dog breeds
There are over 200 kinds of dogs.
April, 10, VT | Dog breed behavior
Do you think that the breed of dogs affect if they like water or not, or is it that some dogs like water and some don't?
