Page
ha, while searching the internet to see how the competition is doing
on robot rambler I stumbled across this page. It's great to see
kids of all ages into building robots. Keep up the good work. (and
I'm curently working on a robot for robot rambler and slowly working
on a combat robot for the next twin cities mechwars)

James, 13, WA| Robot
Ramble
There's another robot competition. One of the National Science Olympiad
events is called "Robot Ramble". You create a robot to
pick up objects and put them in a bin. It's for high schoolers though,
but a new middle school event for 2003 is called "Robo Billiards"
where you have to put billiard balls into certain pockets in a certain
amount of time. It's fun.

Rachel, 13, IL | Mindstorms
The legos are called Lego Mindstorms. I don't know of anywhere else
you can purchase them from. Does anyone know a store you can purchase
them from in Illinios?

GEMS in Ohio
My 12 year old daughter and my 10 year old son would like to join
a lego robotic turnament group. We saw the GEMS show and enjoyed
it very much. Is there a group already in Columbus, Ohio? How do
I start a group?

GEMS
I saw the GEMS segment on TV last week. Totally cool! My school
has a lego program as part of the science curriculum for the sixth-graders(I
did it last year, and built & programmed a scanner. Really hard.
:) GEMS sounds like it rocks! Too bad there isn't a chapter in my
area.

Annice, 11, MN | Hi
from a GEMS girl!
I was on that segment of dragonfly. I really enjoy being in GEMS.
I am glad you guys are intersted in robotics. It is really fun.
I am in 6th grade now ( i was in 4th on the show). I hope u guys
enjoy/enjoyed the GEMS segment and the others because they are neat
too!

DragonflyTV | Start
your own GEMS group
The GEMS group you see featured in DragonflyTV is a group specific
to Minneapolis Schools. GEMS is also the name of a curricular program
out of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, encouraging
girls to pursue science, engineering and math. Read
about them. You
can also start your own GEMS chapter. Here's a tip from Brad Blue,
of Minneapolis Public Schools, on how to proceed. Brad writes: "Start
with a core of (8-10) girls and identify possible funders. PR is
critical - you will find advocates in the school,. community, district,
and state. Sow top seed. And have fun. First LEGO League is a great
place to start. You can contact pitsco.com for teacher training."
Read more about Brad's GEMS group at the Washington
Post Web site.
Finally, another good resource for science and technology education,
particularly in robotics, can be found at For
Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Web site.

For Michigan, you might try the following FIRST
Web site. It's a Lego League competition for boys and girls.

I saw a program where kids belonged to a robot club, where they
built robots and competed against other kids. Is there an organization?
How do I find out about more info.? I would like to sign up.

You are probably talking about the GEMS program. You or your teacher
can go to NCSA
GEMS Web site
In your state.

Charlotte, 9, Florida | join GEMS
I live in St. Petersburg, Florida. How can I be a GEMS girl?
Jan, 11, Delaware | Join GEMS response
Your teacher probably knows. It looks like you have to have the
contest at your school.
Sable,

Is there a GEMS in Illinois? If so,then where.
Jijia,

I
want to know, what computer software was used to programm the robot
in the experiment and where can I purchase this software from? also
where do I find out about other contests like the one the girls
doing the experiment were involved in . I thought all this information
would be posted on the Web site, but I see many others have the same
questions such as myself.

Can the robot do other things? Maybe it can bring me my phone when
it rings? I want to make a robot!
Rita,
11, Indiana | Robots response
Me too. I cant find the right kind of lego kit at the store.
Does anybody know where to get the kind of parts for doing computer
programs with Legos?
Rob,
9, PA | Robots response
I saw a show on January 20 where a group of girls were building
robots. Do you know where the kits or parts can be obtained?
Leah,
43, MN | Robots response
TO: Rita in Indiana, Go to the Lego Web site and you will see all
the Lego robots and software. I think Best Buy sells the software
in the stores, too.
Tanner,
9, MI | Robots response
Lego robots? Try looking for them at Wal-Mart!
Caleb,
WI | Robots response
If you want to know where to find lego parts for making a robot,
you can go to lego Web site/. They have a lot of good stuff there
you can buy. But you might want to check with your parents first.
