Day One
The 2000 Minnesota legislative session began today and Mary Lahammer will bring us her report on all of the first-day activities followed by a live recap from NewsNight's perch in the Capitol gallery.

Before the Bubble Bursts
The U.S. economy has now enjoyed 107 straight months of unprecedented prosperity, a number that alarms some economists who warn that we should keep in mind the boom/bust cycle that devastated Japan in the 80s. CEO and Senior VP of Wells Fargo & Co., Dr. Sung Won Sohn will join us this evening to give us the real lowdown on the surging economy and what it bodes for the future.

Heating Up Already
Only the second day of the 2000 Minnesota Legislature and already hot buttons are being pushed. Today's Transportation Committee hearing covered such high-stakes territory that Governor Ventura himself made a rare appearance to testify personally. Political reporter Mary Lahammer was there and she'll bring us a full report on the day's action.

One of the Costs of Education
As school budgets get stretched ever thinner, teachers find their salaries are not getting any better. Tonight, Joe Nathan of the U of M's Humphrey Institute will join us to talk about this among other education issues.

Minn Rejected
Today, the Minnesota legislature voted against the appointment of Commerce Commissioner Steve Minn. The action had a bit to do with qualifications and a lot to do with politics. NewsNight political reporter Mary Lahammer reports from the capitol. Looking at the Larger Picture
Tonight, we'll be convening our Greater Minnesota editors panel, consisting of Fran Edstrom of the Winona Post, the Mesabi Daily News' Bill Hanna and The Free Press' Deb Flemming. Together, they'll talk about the push for a unicameral legislature, the on-going bonding session and the local stories their papers are covering.

The Drive Begins
This evening, Governor Ventura will meet with both houses of the legislature in an effort to promote his plans for a unicameral amendment. Mary Lahammer will bring up her primer on the issues surrounding this effort to re-shape the way Minnesota does its' business.

Recently, as part of the NewsNight/Star Tribune/WCCO Citizens Forum series, the National Conference for Community and Justice sponsored a forum on youth violence. Ken Stone was there and, tonight, he'll bring us a look at some of the topics discussed, which included single-parent households and the general role of parents in deflecting violence among kids.

Tonight, Lou Harvin talks with Rwandan Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel employee who, in 1994, saved the lives of over 1000 during the genocidal campaign against the Tutsi that claimed 800,000 citizens.

Many Minnesota arts organizations depend heavily on state funds for their continued existence. How long should the state be expected to pay for the cultural edification of the residents - and how much? Arts producer Stephanie Mosher brings us a look at the Twin Cities' arts scene, to be followed by a live, in-studio discussion of the future of state funding.

According to Minnesota's Office of Environmental Assistance (OEA), the average family of 5 generates 10,000 pounds of garbage per year, an amount underscored by today's press conference featuring a 5-ton pile of waste. Tonight, OEA director Sherry Enzler will join us live to discuss what Minnesotans can do to help reduce this staggering amount of trash.

Hands Across the Water
Last month's visit to Cuba by members of St. Thomas' ball team presented numerous opportunities for cross-cultural exchanges. This evening, NewsNight producer Steve Spencer has put together a look at the team's tour of old Cuba's architecture, music and local color.
