The eve of a new session
Tomorrow marks the opening of the 2001 Legislative session so NewsNight's Mary Lahammer will talk to an esteemed panel of political reporters. Minnesota Public Radio's Laura McCallum, the Associated Press' Brian Bakst and Jim Ragsdale of the Pioneer Press will fill you in on what to expect this year.

From ragtime to free form
January is here which means Ken Burns' JAZZ documentary cannot be too far off. To get you in the mood NewsNight will take five and introduce you to the great Butch Thompson. He'll be in to play for us and give us all a piano lesson.

Making a difference
The Minnesota Women's Press has chosen ten people who have made a difference in the lives of women during 2000. NewsNight's Jim Neumann meet up with Cynthia Scott the editor of the Press to find out who was honored.

Is there a change coming?
It is going to be a hot topic during this year's legislative session, should the legal blood alcohol level be lowered from .1 to .08? NewsNight has invited Representative Matt Entenza and the chairman of the Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association, Colin Minehart to the show to discuss the matter.

Mary chats with the Pres
NewsNight's Mary Lahammer caught up with University of Minnesota President Mark Yudof shortly after he addressed the concerns of the U to the House and Senate Higher Education Committees.

Honoring art
Wing Young Huie is being honored with the 2000 U.S. Bank Sally Ordway Irvine Vision Award. Wing amazed us with his photographic exhibit "Lake Street USA" back in the summer of 2000. Tonight we'll drop by for another look.

Politics with Mary
Mary Lahammer will be live from the Capitol reporting on the day's events. Redistricting was a hot topic as was the .08/.1 battle and the Sierra Club wants the state to do more to curb air pollution.

LTV Reaction
NewsNight's Jim Neumann is in Hoyt Lakes and he'll be chiming in with what he has discovered while meeting with former LTV steel workers.

In rehearsal
Lou Harvin crashes another rehearsal as he hooks up with the Stillwater Area High School jazz band preparing for their next concert. Young people enjoying jazz...Satchmo would be proud.

The figures are in
The St. Paul police department has taken a look at who they are pulling over. St. Paul Police Chief William Finney will join us to discuss the findings with NewsNight's Lou Harvin.

The new guy in town
It's Arts & Media night so Jim Neumann headed off to the Ordway Music Theatre in St. Paul to chat with Andreas Delfs. Andreas is the new Music Director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Education Minnesota has released the results of their first statewide poll of Minnesota school superintendents and what was found is alarming. Education Minnesota Co-President, Judy Schaubach will be in to discuss the organization's legislative plans.

Filmmaker Alan Berliner has created art from hundreds of clips of old home videos and films for Minneapolis' Walker Art Center's "Lost Images Regained" show. He'll be in tonight to explain the methods behind his madness.

Ground has been broken for the Hiawatha Light Rail Transit line. Transportation Commissioner Elwyn Tinklenberg will be in studio B to shed some light on the rail line, the Crosstown project, the Stillwater bridge and all things relating to transportation.

Back in the ring
Senator Paul Wellstone has decided to seek a third term in the U.S. Senate. NewsNight's Mary Lahammer was at the press conference today in St. Paul. We'll give you more sound than you'll hear anywhere else.

We've invited two local political junkies to discuss President Clinton's eight years in office. Mitch Pearlstein of the Center of the American Experiment and Duchess Harris of Macalester College will critique Clinton's good bye speech, which you can see live on NewsNight. Undoubtedly they'll also be adding their opinions concerning his legacy.

Busy day at the Capitol
The Capitol was buzzing with activity as a number groups made their voices heard. We'll bring you extended sound from; the Taxpayers Association of Minnesota, the Men's Action Committee, reaction from the Crosstown construction plan and the DFL supporting Senator Wellstone's announcement to seek a third term.

Honoring a leader
Civil rights activist and U of M grad Roy Wilkins is being honored on the 2001 black heritage series commemorative stamp issued by the US Postal Service. NewsNight was at the unveiling and will find out what it takes to be immortalized on a stamp.

Earlier this week Jim Neumann traveled to Little Falls to report on a proposed smoking ban. The votes have been tallied and tonight we will get the reaction of those involved.

Rents are increasing at a rate greater than tenant's compensation, what can be done? Advocates for affordable housing, Monica Nilsson and Deanna Foster will be in to shed some light on the situation.
