Housing Agreement
The NAACP and the city of Minneapolis have reached a tentative agreement over some public housing units in the city. 220 units which were slated for demolition will be razed, 86 units in the Lyndale area will be saved. Some black leaders are unhappy with the agreement... NewsNight's Lou Harvin reports.

Minority Admissions
A study released today claims that minority students applying to the Duluth and Twin Cities campuses' at the University of Minnesota receive preferential treatment. The study was done by a Washington D.C. - based organization which opposes racial preferences. Lou Harvin headed back to school today to get reaction from U President Mark Yudof and some students.

The Reform Party is getting more attention these days than it has in a long while. The election of Jesse Ventura, Pat Buchanan's defection from the GOP and the proposal to change the name back to the Independence Party have all raised the profile of this once-ignored party. Tonight, we'll be joined by Reform Party MN state chair Rick McCluhan as he talks about what's in store for the little party that could.

The Melting Pot
The United Way recently released "Immigrants in the Twin Cities: A Snapshot", their report detailing the emerging Hmong, Somali and Hispanic communities in the metro area. Minnesota Planning state demographer Tom Gillaspy and the United Way's Terri Barreiro will talk about these and other immigrant communities that are that are forming an increasingly large percentage of the Twin Cities' population.

Raising the Level of Literacy
Next week, the University of Minnesota will host the Minnesota Literacy Summit, a statewide forum for legislators, scholars and members of the educational community to explore ways to increase literacy in schools. Joining us this evening to give us a preview will be Linda Mirsky of Minneapolis Schools and Summit co-chair Rosemary Miller.

Grading Duluth Schools
Tonight, we'll feature another in our series of interviews with school superintendents from around the state. Tonight, Duluth superintendent Julio Almanza will join us live to talk about declining enrollments, his days in the St. Paul school system and other topics.

An Ancient Tradition
There was a time when storytellers were the principal keepers of the past for many communities. This weekend, the nationwide members of the Black Storytellers Alliance will gather in the Twin Cities to share stories and history. Storytellers Northando and Vusi Zulu will be with us tonight to talk about the rich heritage of the long-revered oral tradition.

Light - Rail Transit
Today was a big day for light - rail planners in the Twin Cities. Transportation Commissioner Elwyn Tinklenberg announced that the application for millions of dollars in light - rail funds has been sent off to the federal government. Meanwhile, Rep. Phil Krinkie held a press conference accusing the DOT of withholding LRT information and cost estimates during the last legislative session. They will both be here this evening in our studio. Tune in and hear more about this controversy and the immediate future for LRT lines in the Twin Cities.
